DRBRWL shares refreshing self-titled EP ‘Drbrwl’
Minnesota artist DRBRWL has shared a new self-titled EP. Catching our attention for its originality, character-rich sound, and emotive songwriting, Drbrwl finds the musician weaving together a variety of psychedelic soundscapes that make it a refreshing listen. Of Liberian and Ghanaian descent, DRBRWL is currently working as a youth advocate with young people in Minnesota while consistently performing and working on his craft within the twin cities. Releasing a self-titled debut EP, DRBRWL gives us a dose of psychedelic hip-hop and alternative R&B that contains idiosyncratic songwriting and vivid production.
DRBRWL is not an artist who can be confined to one style or sound. His debut EP cares little for following trends or treaded ground, instead going for otherworldly tracks that can’t quite be described with a singular mood. His lyrical themes are poignant, as he discusses introspection, spirituality, and working to become one’s best self, especially evident with the first two songs “within” and “innerstand”. He throws in some more hard-hitting songs such as the aforementioned second track “innerstand” or the closer “no barriers”, which incorporate heavy, trunk-rattling basslines. There are also ethereal moments such as the guitars on “fuse blew” that feel highly dynamic.
Overall, it is an interesting EP that makes a case for DRBRWL’s unique flavor of introspective, lyrical trap.
